This is the time every year when the LEA President asks those who are planning to retire at the end of this school year to please let me know. I know very well that some who approach this passage want no fanfare and no general awareness of their plans except on their own terms. I promise to completely respect any request for silence.
Why do I like to know? First of all, I don’t want to miss anyone when we invite retiring members to be our guests of honor at the Strawberry Festival on May 21. This wonderful event, year in and year out, is a magnificent testament to careers well spent and a joyous affirmation of why we all entered this profession.
Second (please forgive my pragmatism) , knowledge is power. If I know who is retiring, I can accurately predict the salary differential for next year (the difference between a veteran’s salary and an average new-hire salary). In years when the budget is tight, this knowledge can often be used to prevent unnecessary anxiety about job or program cuts should it come to that.
Some of you have already met with me to go over retirement issues. You do not need to tell me again. If you haven’t, I respectfully request your letting me know. Thanks so much.
